Weekly Weather Event -Week of September 20th

September 24, 2021

Hurricane Sam is currently making its way through the Atlantic Basin and is expected to strengthen over the weekend into a major hurricane. Sam is now the seventh hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, a quick upgrade from its status as Tropical Depression 18 only 24 hours prior. Despite rapid intensification in the tropical system, however, it is currently uncertain where Sam’s impacts will be felt. Residents throughout the Leeward Isles and the eastern Caribbean are being asked to monitor updates. Most models have Sam curving away from the United States, but this is subject to change.

In addition to being the seventh hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Sam is also the eighteenth named storm. NOAA’s prediction for this year’s hurricane season was updated in early August to 15-21 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes within those named storms, and 3-5 major hurricanes. With two more months left in the hurricane season, this year may also see the need for the supplemental names list.

We recommend staying up to date with this tropical system as more information becomes available.
