Weekly Weather Event -Week of June 14th

June 19, 2021

At 4:00 am CDT, Tropical Storm Claudette formed per the National Hurricane Center, marking the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. This occurred after the storm’s center of circulation had already come ashore. By 7:00 am CDT, Claudette had moved inland over southeastern Louisiana with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph). 5 to 10 inches (12 to 15 centimeters) of rain are expected for this storm with local totals going as high as 15 inches (38 centimeters). Flash flooding is expected throughout the Central Gulf Coast.

Unlike previous hurricane seasons, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season will not be using the Greek Alphabet as supplemental names should the 2021 list be exhausted. This decision was made in light of the record breaking 2020 hurricane season, which included a number of storms that likely would have had their names retired had they not been Greek letters. Instead, an additional list with supplemental names has been provided by the World Meteorological Organization. Like the main hurricane naming list, English, French, and Spanish names are used to better reflect the languages of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the North Atlantic.

We recommend keeping up to date with this storm. All information contained within this article is valid as of 9:30 am CDT.
