Weekly Weather Event -Week of July 4
July 8, 2022On Wednesday, a confirmed EF2 tornado touched down in southwest Ohio in the suburbs of Cincinnati. An EF2 rated tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale can have winds between 111 and 135 miles per hour. The tornado caused nearly 100,000 power outages for residents in the area as well as damaging a local fire station and grocery store.
The tornado came as a result of a derecho just the day before. The line of storms traveled through the Midwest on Tuesday, causing power outages and leaving at least four people injured. Derecho events often come with the hot and humid weather conditions of the Ohio Valley area in the summers. The National Weather Service describes a derecho as “a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms”. Derechos usually produce what appears to be “straight-line wind damage” with winds of at least 58 miles per hour.
