Dr. Louis Uccellini applying for WMO President
February 26, 2019Dr. Louis Uccelini, UW-AOS Alumnus (B.S. 1971, M.S. 1972, Ph.D. 1977) and the current Director of the U.S. National Weather Service recently announced that he is running for the position of President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)
This announcement was publicized by Dr. Marshall Shepherd, an atmospheric sciences professor at the University of Georgia and a past president of the American Meteorological Society (AMS), in a recent blog entitled What's the WMO and Why Does The U.S. National Weather Service Director Want to Lead It?In this blog, Dr. Shepherd introduces the public to the WMO, providing historical context to the WMO as an international organization within the United Nations that specializes in meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. Dr. Shepherd also lists some of the reasons why Dr. Uccellini, who also is a past AMS president, is running for the WMO post and why he would be qualified for this position.
Another UW-AOS/Meteorology Dept alumnus, John W. Zillman, (Ph.D. 1973, Johnson) is a past president of the World Meteorological Organization, having served from 1995 to 2003.
