Tristan L’Ecuyer Elected as AMS Fellow
August 26, 2024
Tristan L’Ecuyer, AOS professor and director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), has been elected as an American Meteorological Society (AMS) Fellow.
This prestigious honor – reserved for no more than two-tenths of one percent of all AMS members – is given annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences over a substantial period of years.
L’Ecuyer, who joined AOS in 2011, is an international leader in remote sensing of atmospheric energy balance. Among his long list of publications, funding, awards, and citations, the NASA-funded Polar Radiant Energy in the Far InfraRed Experiment (PREFIRE) stands out. PREFIRE, conceived and led by L’Ecuyer, will make the first full spectral measurements of Far InfraRed (FIR) radiation in the Arctic. It fills a major gap in our knowledge of the Arctic energy budget and the role of FIR radiation in Arctic warming, sea ice loss, ice sheet melt, and sea level rise.
“Tristan is at the top of his game, and the PREFIRE mission will be a lasting legacy of his career,” notes AOS Department Chair Ankur Desai. “His election as an AMS Fellow is highly fitting and a much-needed acknowledgment of his tireless dedication to improving our field with technology development, voluminous mentoring, and exemplary leadership.”
AMS awards and honors presentations will formally occur at the 105th AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, in January 2025. Congratulations and well deserved, Tristan!
