Stephanie Ortland
I am a Ph.D. Candidate working with the ProbSevere (Probability of Severe) research group in collaboration with Dr. Mike Pavolonis (NOAA). I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Carthage College (2017) and my Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2021). Primarily my research interests relate to thunderstorms: convection, thunderstorm lifecycles, remote detection, nowcasting with artificial intelligence, microphysics, electrical properties, etc. Currently, my work focuses on developing a deep learning model for nowcasting thunderstorms (ThunderCast) and using the model output to gain further insight into the fundamental physical processes contributing to thunderstorm development.
When out of the office, you can find me in my garden, on an adventure with my two cats, golfing, baking, or tucked away with a book.
