Kris Craven

Kris Craven received her MS (1999) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Previous to her attendance at UW, she received a BA (1992) in Environmental Studies from the University of Kansas, with an emphasis in Land Use Planning and Resource Management. After graduate coursework in Geophysics, she then transferred to the UW to pursue her interest in operational forecasting. She is the recipient of the Wahl Award for Outstanding Performance as a Graduate Teaching assistant at the UW, and also a recipient of the Slossen Award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant from the University of Kansas.

Kris is the MIC at the National Weather Service in Topeka, Kansas, where she previously was a senior meteorologist and acted as the local Fire Weather Program leader. She is an 11 year committee member of Women in Science Day at Washburn University, hosting over 200 middle school girls annually for a one day event exploring various activities in the STEM sciences. Previously she was a general forecaster at the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, and she served as an intern at the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida. From hurricanes to mountain snowstorms to significant tornadoes, Ms. Craven has a broad range of experience forecasting for many different climate regimes.
